Beekeeping is a fascinating, fun, and delicious hobby. But what does it take to be successful? This workshop is led by Heike Williams of OSU Extension and an OSU-trained beekeeper only a couple years into this hobby. They'll give you the real buzz about the experience of getting a hive off the ground and surviving Central Oregon winters. You'll come away knowing if beekeeping is right for you.

This session is designed to help you determine if beekeeping is for you. You'll join in group activities with a second-year beekeeping apprentice, and hear first hand about her experiences getting into this world.
Learn about the joys and challenges when keeping a honey bee hive in your backyard. The workshop will give you an idea what time commitment and equipment are required, how to get started and where to find the great resources we have in Central Oregon for “newbee” beekeepers.
Ever want to put on that cool beekeeper hat and crack into a hive? Well, here's your chance! Don't worry, you'll be expertly guided by OSU Extension's Heike Williams. We supply the bees, you supply the bravado!

Heike discovered her passion for beekeeping while working in Portland, OR in the mid-1990s. Heike holds a position as a Bio Science Research Technician at OSU’s Research Facility in Madras. Her duties include assisting the Honey Bee Lab in Corvallis in honey bee research in Central Oregon, working in apiculture outreach, and conducting the potato pest-monitoring program in the region. Heike was and still is a member of the steering committee which implemented the Oregon Master Beekeeper Program.

After 30+ years as an engineer in corporate America, Joan Sciacca retired to a log home on 5 acres in Central Oregon, looked around and thought, "Now what?" An answer turned out to be beekeeping. Joan completed the Apprentice Level Certification and is currently enrolled in the Journey Level Certification of the OSU Oregon Master Beekeeper Program. Joan grew up following her father around helping with all his projects. DIY is in her DNA. She has two honey bee colonies and wants to turn some of her land into pollinator habitat with an emphasis on native plants. In her spare time, she serves as Secretary on School of Ranch's board and goes helicopter skiing. You go, Joan!

We supply the main protein, the rest is up to you.
